Senior Scientist, Cetus Corporation, Emeryville, CA 1980-1990
Head, Clinical Biology Laboratory 1985-1990
•Designed computer data bases and programs to analyze and inventory clinical samples and provide statistics on assay results.
•Developed computer programs and implemented pharmacokinetic analysis of all recombinant proteins used in clinical trials.
•Monitored immunogenicity of protein therapeutics.
•Investigated the kinetics of serum lymphokine levels in patients as indicators of efficacy and toxicity during clinical trials of IL-2 and MCSF.
•Planned and initiated bioavailability studies of orally administered generic drugs for FDA submissions.
Director, Dept. of Cell Biology and Immunology 1983-1985
Project Head: Interferon Research 1982-1985 (40 scientists and technicians with a budget of $10 million for a 5 year program. Betaseron has been approved by the FDA.)
•Supervised research contracts with faculty and staff at the Univ. of Wisconsin.
• Participated in cloning and expression of genes for beta, gamma, and alpha interferons in both bacteria and animal cells.
• Represented Cetus Corporation in visits to the FDA concerning clinical trials.
Project Head: Insulin 1981-1983
• A research and development staff of approximately 20 scientists and technicians.
• Cloned and expressed the human insulin gene with a chimeric leader sequence and the beta-lactamase promoter. Proinsulin was secreted from bacteria.
• Obtained approval for fermentation scale up of insuln, interferon, and vaccines from the NIH Recombinant Advisory Committee as the Principal Investigator of these projects.
Associate Research Biologist 1974-1980
Dept. of Molecular Biology, University of California at Berkeley
• Head, Computer Unit, NIH Research Resource Facility for Automated Cell Biology, which consisted of a DEC PDP10 and 3 programmers.
• Developed hardware for photography of animal cell colonies and software for image analysis. The shape, size, and growth rate of colonies was used to measure effects of hormones and growth factors and follow genetics of cell-cell adhesion.
Assistant Professor 1966-1974
Dept. of Chemistry and Institute of Molecular Biology, University of Calif. at Los Angeles
• Taught biochemistry and molecular biology lecture and laboratory classes from sophomore to graduate level.
• Supervised three students who received the Ph.D. degree, and one postdoctoral fellow.
• Obtained NSF and NIH research grants exceeding $160,000.
